Windows Terminal Services
ConStar 2000 and Terminal Services
This document describes how to install ConStar 2000 for use in a Windows Terminal Services environment.
Step 1.
On every computer that will be executing ConStar applications, i.e. actually running the ConStar programmes, install the Borland database drivers. For details about this installation, please see the relevant section below.
Step 2.
On the server where the ConStar environment is to be installed, create a shared folder called SMS. This folder will be where the ConStar environment will be stored. Select a drive letter that can be used on all computers accessing ConStar 2000 and map this drive letter to the SMS folder on the server. Create the same mapping on each computer that will be accessing ConStar through the LAN (not those computers accessing ConStar through terminal services).
Step 3.
Install the ConStar 2000 system as per instructions provided with the installation disk. The destination of the installation should be the drive letter that has been mapped to the SMS folder on the server. When the installation is complete, you should see the following configuration on the servers drive: C:\SMS\CONSTARW. The CONSTARW folder contains the programmes. Underneath that you will see a DATA folder. This is where ConStar will build separate folders for every database to be managed.
Step 4.
Create the necessary shortcuts to launch the required ConStar programmes. The shortcuts should launch ConStar through the drive letter mapped to the server's SMS folder. For example: if you assigned the G: drive to map to the SMS folder, the shortcut would target the programme as follows: G:\CONSTARW\UMGNT.EXE. This example launches the Unit Management module. See the chart below for all the programme names.
Step 5.
For every person accessing ConStar through terminal services, you will need to create a separate folder on the server to act as database caching space. It is critical that this space is unique to each user. For example: if you establish a terminal service login for JOHN, create a folder called JOHN on the server. Configure the login so that JOHN can only launch one terminal service session. Prevent multiple logins for John. In the environment variables for JOHN, enter the following:
Variable: ConStarTemp (this is case sensitive)
Value: c:\John (this is not case sensitive)
In this example, the assumption is that the C: refers to the servers drive where the JOHN folder has been created. You could also use a different drive letter that has been mapped to the server's drive. In that case, we suggest you make a shared folder called SMSTEMP on the server and then put the JOHN folder into the SMSTEMP folder and map the drive to \\server\smstemp.
When ConStar programmes are launched, they search the environment variables that will tell them where to establish the private caching files for the ConStar databases.
Please note that environment variables don't become active until the computer has been restarted.
Borland Database Engine Installation
ConStar for Windows uses the Borland Database Engine to manage its data files. The Borland database software must be installed on every computer that will be used to access ConStar 2000. This installation must be done once for each computer, prior to installing any ConStar programmes, and prior to creating desktop icons that will access ConStar programmes. If you are running a local area network, this software needs to be installed on each workstation before the computer can access the ConStar database.
The Borland Database Engine software has been provided to you in the form of a CD. To install this software please do the following:
Insert the CD disk into the CD drive on the computer where the install will take place
Go to “My Computer” and find the CD drive. Double-click on the CD drive.
Double-click on a folder called “Borland”
Double-click on the icon called “Setup.Exe”. It looks like a computer. This will start the setup process. The database software will be installed in a folder called c:\ipapi unless you have another copy of the database engine installed for Paymate.
When this process is complete, you can install the ConStar for Windows software or create icons that will let the computer access the ConStar system.
Store this disk in a safe place. You may need it again later if you add a new computer to your network or set up a new computer to access ConStar.

Creating Desktop Short-cuts
Not every user of the ConStar 2000 system will necessarily need access to all the modules listed above. The system administrator must decide which modules each ConStar user will need, and then create the necessary short-cuts on that person's computer.
To create a short-cut, please do the following:
Right-click on an empty space on the desktop, and then select “New”. From the “New” sub-menu select “Shortcut”
In the prompt for a command line, first enter the drive and path information shown at the top of this document. Next put in a slash (\), followed by the programme name of the module you want to install. Press [Enter] or click on “Next”. For example: c:\constarw\umgnt.exe.
At the next prompt, enter the name you want to associate with the shortcut. You might use the descriptive names shown in the tables above. Click on “Finish” or press [Enter].
After the short-cut has been created, you might want to move it to a new location on the screen by holding down the left mouse button on the shortcut and dragging it to a new location on the screen, and then releasing the mouse button.
